After Chicago policemen killed several anarchists and labor activists following a violent dispute with factory scabs, May 3rd, 1886 (the day before the infamous Haymarket affair), August Spies printed his famous circular, “Revenge”. Copies of the notorious print flooded Chicago, increasing the tensions that would produce conflict the following day. Spies was later indicted, and executed, by the state for antagonism precipitating the infamous violence of Haymarket.
